Prerequisite: This is NOT a basic pistol or holster skills course. Participants are encouraged to first take a private lesson or a new shooter course if they have not shot a gun before or if they are returning to shooting from a long hiatus.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a 3.5-hour class will cover the various rules to carry a concealed firearm in the State of Maine. A certificate from the successful completion of this class is applicable to use in the Maine Concealed Carry Application process. Topics will include Range Rules, Safe Handling Rules, Safe Storage & Transportation, Personal Responsibility and Liability, Firearm Selection Criteria, Modifications/Accessories, Carry Gear vs Range Gear, Ammunition Selection, mindset,  use of force, disparity of force, castle doctrine, stand your ground, talking to the police, and continuing education.

Participants are expected to know how to operate a semiautomatic handgun, or a revolver if supplying their own gun, for the shooting qualification. To successfully pass this class participants must be able to demonstrate basic handgun skills including: loading and making ready, following range commands through two 5-round courses of fire (for a total of 10 rounds), and safely clear and bench their gun. Participants must be able to demonstrate the four rules of gun safety at all times through the entire course of fire. If you feel these are not a skill sets you are able to demonstrate at this time we encourage you to first take a Private Lesson or enroll in a New Shooter course.

  • All firearms and ammunition for the live fire qualification are provided by Howell’s.
  • *If you would like to bring your own firearm you are welcome to do so. You are required to bring 10 rounds of factory FMJ ball ammunition, in your handgn caliber of choice, to shoot the final live fire qualification.

PASS or CLASS: A participant that completes the classroom session and can safely demonstrate gun safety and safely shoot the qualification with a total of 10 rounds on target will PASS this class and a certificate of completion will be issued. In the event that a participant completes the classroom session but does not meet the safety or basic gun handling skills requirements the participant will receive a CLASS recommendation and the certificate will be deferred until training is completed to successfully reshoot and pass the qual. It is up to the participant that receives a CLASS recommendation to book either a private lesson or enroll in a New Shooter program of their choice in order to have an opportunity to receive the necessary training to successfully reshoot the qual. After successfully performing the qual Howells will then issue the Maine Concealed Carry certificate of completion.

EVENT REGISTRATION TERMS & CONDITIONS
Course Transfer: With 72-hour advance notice of the event date we will issue a unique re-registration code for course transfers.
Cancellation Refund: Refunds for 50% balance of event fee, if no transfer is possible, are issued in the form of store gift cards only but ONLY if we are notified of the cancelation up to 72 hours in advance of the event date.
No-Call/No-Show: Participants who do not show to the event without prior 72-hour notice forfeit their total registration fees.
Same Day Cancelations: Same day cancelations are non-refundable as spots in classes are quick to fill and we will be unable to resell that spot in the event or give an individual on a waitlist adequate time to purchase that spot.
