SUMMARY:11/29/23 - Youth Safety League
DESCRIPTION:Howell’s Youth Safety League is a monthly 60 minute lesson and range time for students 10 to 18 designed to instill firearm safety\, education and marksmanship skills. This program is an opportunity for our young students to learn with others\, make friends\, build character\, and continue the tradition of shooting sports and safety practices. This league is open to all students whom have taken a private lesson at Howell’s within one calendar year where the basics of range safety and etiquette are taught on a one-on-one basis. Students must be accompanied by a participating parent/guardian over the age of 21 years old. \nMontly meetings focus on safety and a themed lesson on marksmanship and precision. Participants then transition to the range to shoot the NRA Pistol Qualification and NRA Rifle Qualification exercises and progress through the series at their own pace. Individual coaching\, safety monitors (RSO’s) are present to support each participant and their accompanying parent/guardian in the range at all times. \nRequired Equipment \n\n.22lr\, 380 or 9mm Semi Automatic handguns provided\nParticipants are welcome to bring their own .22lr\, 380 or 9mm Semi Automatic handguns to work with during class\n100 to 150 rounds of caliber appropriate FMJ Ball ammunition estimated per class\nAmmunition can be purchased at check-in if utilizing Howell’s equipment\nHowell’s equipment requires ammunition purchase from Howell’s (nothing brought in from home please.)\nEye protection for both participant and guardian (available for purchase at check-in)\nHearing protection for both participant and guardian (available for purchase at check-in)\nRange appropriate attire for both participant and parent/guardian\nClosed toe shoes for both participant and guardian\nA good attitude and an open mind 🙂\n\n\n\nHOWELL’S TERMS – CLASS CANCELLATIONS \nNo Call/No Show: All no-call/no-show participants will be non-refundable not eligible for store credit or transfer. \nLate Arrival: Arriving more than 15 minutes after class start time is considered no-call/no-show. \nStudent Cancelation: Refunds for 100% balance of event fee\, if no transfer is possible\, are issued ONLY if we are notified of the cancellation more than 48 hours in advance of the event date. Notifications received within 48 hours of the event date are eligible for 50% refund or 50% tuition value applied towards an upcoming course within one calendar year. \nHowell’s Cancelation: Should Howell’s need to cancel a class students will be contacted via email\, phone and/or text with as much notice as possible. Participants are encouraged to first take a private lesson or a new shooter course if they have not shot a gun before or if they are returning to shooting from a long hiatus. \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\nThis is a 3-hour class covers the various rules to carry a concealed firearm in the State of Maine. A certificate from the successful completion of this class is applicable to use in the Maine Concealed Carry Application process. Topics will include Range Rules\, Safe Handling Rules\, Safe Storage & Transportation\, Personal Responsibility and Liability\, Firearm Selection Criteria\, Modifications/Accessories\, Carry Gear vs Range Gear\, Ammunition Selection\, mindset\,  use of force\, the disparity of force\, castle doctrine\, stand your ground\, talking to the police\, and continuing education. \nParticipants are expected to know how to operate a semiautomatic handgun\, or a revolver if supplying their own gun\, for the shooting qualification. To successfully pass this class participants must be able to demonstrate basic handgun skills including loading and making ready\, following range commands through two 5-round courses of fire (for a total of 10 rounds)\, and safely clear and bench their gun. Participants must be able to demonstrate the four rules of gun safety at all times through the entire course of fire. If you feel these are not a skill sets you are able to demonstrate at this time we encourage you to first take a Private Lesson or enroll in a New Shooter course. \nREQUIRED EQUIPMENT \n\nEye & ear protection\nClosed-toe shoes\nHigh collared shirt\nBrimmed ball caps recommended\nNotebook & Pen\nAll firearms and ammunition for the live fire qualification are provided by Howell’s.\n*If you would like to bring your own firearm you are welcome to do so. You are required to bring 10 rounds of factory FMJ ball ammunition\, in your handgun caliber of choice\, to shoot the final live fire qualification.\n\nPASS or CLASS: A participant that completes the classroom session and can safely demonstrate gun safety and safely shoot the qualification with a total of 10 rounds on target will PASS this class and a certificate of completion will be issued. In the event that a participant completes the classroom session but does not meet the safety or basic gun handling skills requirements\, the participant will receive a CLASS recommendation and the certificate will be deferred until training is completed to successfully reshoot and pass the qual. It is up to the participant that receives a CLASS recommendation to book either a private lesson or enroll in a New Shooter program of their choice in order to have an opportunity to receive the necessary training to successfully reshoot the qual. DESCRIPTION:Pistols are one of the most well-liked types of firearms and have been around for over a hundred years. They prove to be popular year after year and are used for competition\, personal protection\, professional uses\, and as a hobby by many people. \nWhat You Will Learn\nIt takes more than just knowing how to pull a trigger in order to competently use a pistol. This course will teach you everything you need to safely put bullets on target with your pistol and ammunition or you can use our equipment. The topics include: \n\nFirearm Safety\nPistol Knowledge\nAmmunition Knowledge\nSelecting and Maintaining Your Pistol\nPistol Shooting Fundamentals\nScoring Targets\nShooting Skill Development\n\n  \nThe Prerequisites\nThe NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course is designed to educate everyone\, including people who have never shot before\, how to confidently and safely fire handguns. As such\, all you have to bring is a willingness to learn. For a nominal fee\, we can supply everything else. \nWhat to Expect\nThis course involves both classroom and live-fire activities. You will learn the skills in a classroom setting and will practice them with dummy ammunition. You will also acquaint yourself with both revolvers and semi-automatic handguns. \nThen you will practice your skills at the shooting range\, under the direction of an NRA Certified Instructor. After that\, your knowledge will be tested using the Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination. \nYou will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook and a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor. \nHow You Benefit\nUpon completing this course\, you will be able to select a handgun for yourself\, select the appropriate ammunition\, then accurately shoot groups on targets. Even if you have never used a gun before\, you will be able to safely shoot one after taking this course. \nYou will also have the basics in place to learn how to defend yourself against a violent attack should you wish to continue your training in the defensive shooting discipline. Depending on your state\, this course may be necessary in order to acquire a concealed carry license. Participants are encouraged to first take a private lesson or a new shooter course if they have not shot a gun before or if they are returning to shooting from a long hiatus. \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\nThis is a 3-hour class covers the various rules to carry a concealed firearm in the State of Maine. A certificate from the successful completion of this class is applicable to use in the Maine Concealed Carry Application process. Topics will include Range Rules\, Safe Handling Rules\, Safe Storage & Transportation\, Personal Responsibility and Liability\, Firearm Selection Criteria\, Modifications/Accessories\, Carry Gear vs Range Gear\, Ammunition Selection\, mindset\,  use of force\, the disparity of force\, castle doctrine\, stand your ground\, talking to the police\, and continuing education. \nParticipants are expected to know how to operate a semiautomatic handgun\, or a revolver if supplying their own gun\, for the shooting qualification. To successfully pass this class participants must be able to demonstrate basic handgun skills including loading and making ready\, following range commands through two 5-round courses of fire (for a total of 10 rounds)\, and safely clear and bench their gun. Participants must be able to demonstrate the four rules of gun safety at all times through the entire course of fire. If you feel these are not a skill sets you are able to demonstrate at this time we encourage you to first take a Private Lesson or enroll in a New Shooter course. \nREQUIRED EQUIPMENT \n\nEye & ear protection\nClosed-toe shoes\nHigh collared shirt\nBrimmed ball caps recommended\nNotebook & Pen\nAll firearms and ammunition for the live fire qualification are provided by Howell’s.\n*If you would like to bring your own firearm you are welcome to do so. DESCRIPTION:Are you someone interested in teaching others how to shoot or shoot better? If so\, the NRA Instructor program is for you. Many people want to share their knowledge of shooting with others as a responsibility towards their community and society as a whole. However\, if you choose to teach shooting skills to others\, you can’t merely rely on your shooting skills. You have to learn how to teach\, to share the knowledge you have efficiently. To become an NRA Instructor and teach NRA programs\, you have to meet certain requirements that qualify you to become a certified NRA instructor. \nPrerequisites for Being an NRA Instructor in any discipline\nHere are some of the requirements that you have to fulfill before becoming an NRA instructor. \n\nBefore you are allowed into the Instructor Candidate program\, you will need to take and pass the student course in the discipline you are wanting to teach.\nYou will also be required to take the NRA Basic Instructor Training course as an Instructor Candidate before you can enroll in a specific discipline. This course is good for 2 years so you can add on additional NRA Instructor Disciplines without having to take this course again.\nSince you are going to be teaching students a specific shooting discipline\, you will have to get an Instructor certification in that discipline. For instance\, you need an NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Instructor certification to be an instructor in that discipline.\nYou have to prove that you can handle firearms well\, and that you act safely and responsibly with them. You will also have to show some aptitude in your shooting skill in the NRA discipline you want to teach.\nAn NRA Appointed Training Counselor will conduct a pre-course assessment and qualification for each Instructor Candidate. During the Basic Instructor Training course candidates will learn NRA policies and procedures; basic public speaking skills; training methodology; use of a training team and training aids; organizing a course\, building a budget; and finally preparing to teach. In addition\, candidates will be provided the appropriate lesson plans and basic course student packets. Role-playing is a major part of an instructor course; therefore\, the minimum class size should be at least four candidates\, with 10-12 candidates being ideal. Candidates take turns working in teams\, actually conducting portions of the course to other candidates who portray basic students. \nInstructor training courses are conducted by NRA Training Counselors. Defensive Handgun is an Intermediate Handgun for Self Defense that has you moving\, shooting\, and problem-solving. Emphasis is towards drills and scenarios that simulate having children or family as part of a deadly force encounter and how to manage them to keep them safe. DESCRIPTION:Howell’s Youth Safety League is a monthly 60 minute lesson and range time for students 10 to 18 designed to instill firearm safety\, education and marksmanship skills. This program is an opportunity for our young students to learn with others\, make friends\, build character\, and continue the tradition of shooting sports and safety practices. This league is open to all students whom have taken a private lesson at Howell’s within one calendar year where the basics of range safety and etiquette are taught on a one-on-one basis. Students must be accompanied by a participating parent/guardian over the age of 21 years old. \nMontly meetings focus on safety and a themed lesson on marksmanship and precision. Participants then transition to the range to shoot the NRA Pistol Qualification and NRA Rifle Qualification exercises and progress through the series at their own pace.
