DESCRIPTION:Howell’s Gun Shop is pleased to present the Howell’s Gunslinger Match!  \nHowell’s pistol match is designed to be safe\, fun and challenging! Stages change weekly and can include: safe movement with barricades\, strong and support hand shooting\, steel plates\, low light\, moving targets\, bowling pin shoots\, accuracy exercises\, speed exercises and more! Put your skills to the test! \nHowell’s Gunslinger Match is open to the not-so-beginner shooter who can safely handle and shoot their handgun. While we don’t recommend this event as your very first shooting experience we do encourage shooters of all skill levels to come and experience this friendly competition. \nFEE: $15\nEVENTS HELD WEEKLY! Thursdays\, 2:00pm – 5:30pm \n\nWalk-ins welcome! This is NOT a pre-registration event. Roster of shooters is based on a first come first serve basis.\nOur matches are designed to take roughly 5-10 minutes for each shooter. Each participant shoots the match twice in a row\, their top score out of the two is entered into the competitor pool.\n\nEQUIPMENT: \n\nEye & Hearing Protection\nRange appropriate attire\nCenterfire pistol\n50 Rounds of factory FMJ ball ammo\nMinimum of 3 magazines (To save time for shooting we strongly recommend coming with 3 mags preloaded with 8 rounds each.)\nMatch may or may not involve shooting on the move: Gun belt\, Mag Pouches\, Strong side outside the waistband (OWB) holster. (For safety reasons bra holsters\, soft side collapsible holsters\, cross draw\, serpa\, ankle\, off body and behind-the-back posters are NOT allowed during live-fire portion of course. Contact us with questions.)\nA good attitude!\n\nSAFETY:  \n\nAll participants must sign in on the group event waiver.\nProfessional behavior is expected at all times.\nWe run a COLD range. This means – all guns are unloaded and cased until it is your designated time to load and make ready per the RSO’s direction. \nSafety rules and stage protocol will be briefed prior to the match and strictly enforced. \nAll shooting is conducted under the supervision of Howell’s certified Range Safety Officers and staff.\n\nRULES & ETIQUETTE: \n\nOrder of waiver sign in represents order of shooters.\nEach shooter will shoot match twice per event. \nParticipants are expected to help tape or reset targets between shooters.\nThere is NO filming of other shooters without their expressed permission.\n\nSCORING: \n\nHowell’s prefers to keep our scoring simple: Any shot that breaks the line is considered a hit and scored according to the target in use. \nHowell’s RSO in charge has the final say on the scoring. \nTie breakers are a very real possibility and a bullseye shoot off will determine the winner.\nAll scores will be logged.

To become a NRA Range Safety Officer\, you must pass the RSO course and demonstrate that you possess the knowledge\, skills\, and attitude essential to organizing\, conducting\, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. The course covers different firearm types\, actions\, parts\, and their operation. Ammunition types\, storage options and proper care & maintenance and above all\, safety on the range and roles and responsibilities are also covered. \nThis is a hands-on course which includes classroom instruction and practical exercises which may be conducted in the classroom or at the range.  There is no live fire during this class.  All materials and firearms needed are supplied. The nine-hour course consists of classroom time and practical exercises conducted on a range. \nPrerequisite: Possession of basic firearm safety and shooting skills is a perquisite for certification as an NRA instructor. This is NOT a basic firearms class. Participants are encouraged to first take a private lesson or a new shooter course if they have not shot a gun before or if they are returning to shooting from a long hiatus. \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\nThis is a 3-hour class covers the various rules to carry a concealed firearm in the State of Maine. A certificate from the successful completion of this class is applicable to use in the Maine Concealed Carry Application process. Topics will include Range Rules\, Safe Handling Rules\, Safe Storage & Transportation\, Personal Responsibility and Liability\, Firearm Selection Criteria\, Modifications/Accessories\, Carry Gear vs Range Gear\, Ammunition Selection\, mindset\,  use of force\, the disparity of force\, castle doctrine\, stand your ground\, talking to the police\, and continuing education. \nParticipants are expected to know how to operate a semiautomatic handgun\, or a revolver if supplying their own gun\, for the shooting qualification. To successfully pass this class participants must be able to demonstrate basic handgun skills including loading and making ready\, following range commands through two 5-round courses of fire (for a total of 10 rounds)\, and safely clear and bench their gun. Participants must be able to demonstrate the four rules of gun safety at all times through the entire course of fire. If you feel these are not a skill sets you are able to demonstrate at this time we encourage you to first take a Private Lesson or enroll in a New Shooter course. \nREQUIRED EQUIPMENT \n\nEye & ear protection\nClosed-toe shoes\nHigh collared shirt\nBrimmed ball caps recommended\nNotebook & Pen\nAll firearms and ammunition for the live fire qualification are provided by Howell’s.\n*If you would like to bring your own firearm you are welcome to do so. You are required to bring 10 rounds of factory FMJ ball ammunition\, in your handgun caliber of choice\, to shoot the final live fire qualification.\n\nPASS or CLASS: A participant that completes the classroom session and can safely demonstrate gun safety and safely shoot the qualification with a total of 10 rounds on target will PASS this class and a certificate of completion will be issued. In the event that a participant completes the classroom session but does not meet the safety or basic gun handling skills requirements\, the participant will receive a CLASS recommendation and the certificate will be deferred until training is completed to successfully reshoot and pass the qual. It is up to the participant that receives a CLASS recommendation to book either a private lesson or enroll in a New Shooter program of their choice in order to have an opportunity to receive the necessary training to successfully reshoot the qual. SUMMARY:Howell’s Youth Safety League
DESCRIPTION:Howell’s Youth Safety League is a monthly 60 minute lesson and range time for students 10 to 18 designed to instill firearm safety\, education and marksmanship skills. This program is an opportunity for our young students to learn with others\, make friends\, build character\, and continue the tradition of shooting sports and safety practices. This league is open to all students whom have taken a private lesson at Howell’s within one calendar year where the basics of range safety and etiquette are taught on a one-on-one basis. Students must be accompanied by a participating parent/guardian over the age of 21 years old. \nMontly meetings focus on safety and a themed lesson on marksmanship and precision. Participants then transition to the range to shoot the NRA Winchester Pistol Qualification exercises and progress through the series at their own pace. Individual coaching\, safety monitors (RSO’s) are present to support each participant and their accompanying parent/guardian in the range at all times. \nRequired Equipment \n\n.22lr\, 380 or 9mm Semi Automatic handguns provided\nParticipants are welcome to bring their own .22lr\, 380 or 9mm Semi Automatic handguns to work with during class\n100 to 150 rounds of caliber appropriate FMJ Ball ammunition estimated per class\nAmmunition can be purchased at check-in if utilizing Howell’s equipment\nHowell’s equipment requires ammunition purchase from Howell’s (nothing brought in from home please.)\nEye protection for both participant and guardian (available for purchase at check-in)\nHearing protection for both participant and guardian (available for purchase at check-in)\nRange appropriate attire for both participant and parent/guardian\nClosed toe shoes for both participant and guardian\nA good attitude and an open mind 🙂\n\nEVENT REGISTRATION TERMS & CONDITIONS\nCourse Transfer: With 72-hour advance notice of the event date we will issue a unique re-registration code for course transfers.\nCancellation Refund: Refunds for 50% balance of event fee\, if no transfer is possible\, are issued in the form of store gift cards only but ONLY if we are notified of the cancelation up to 72 hours in advance of the event date.\nNo-Call/No-Show: Participants who do not show to the event without prior 72-hour notice forfeit their total registration fees.\nSame Day Cancelations: Same day cancelations are non-refundable as spots in classes are quick to fill and we will be unable to resell that spot in the event or give an individual on a waitlist adequate time to purchase that spot.
